“Pursue Growth and Learning” is one of our 10 Core Values here at Zappos.com. We made the decision to frame our Core Values as actionable statements to help us all remember that the intent with Core Values should NOT just be to use them as a marketing tool or to hand them out to new hires on their first day. Nope, in order for Core Values to work, you’ve got to LIVE and COMMIT to them.
Since Zappos HQ is based in downtown Las Vegas, we’re no strangers to Elvis sightings, and the King himself had some wise words about more than just hip shaking. “Values are like fingerprints,” he said. “Nobody’s are the same, but you leave ‘em all over everything you do.” Personal core values are intrinsic beliefs that affect how we interact with the world around us. In a previous post, we talked about the benefits of identifying core values, but how does one go about it?
Your personal core values define who you are, and a company's core values ultimately define the company's character and brand. For individuals, character is destiny. For organizations, culture is destiny.” ~ Tony Hsieh
The Zappos Family Core Values are the benchmark for everything that we do as a company. We hire and fire based on them, and every decision made will have the Core Values in mind. It’s who we are; not just as employees but as people.
I came across this video of Steve Jobs, and wanted to share it because I believe the point he makes is so important.
