Q: How do you transition your employees to working from home?

A: Each employee has been provided with the technology, tools, and in some cases even furniture (desks and office chairs) to be setup for success. Managers are using different methods for tracking their team’s productivity. That could be through daily check-in’s, project boards, or 3rd party project management platforms like Asana. We are also paying each employee $100/month for phone and internet services.

Q: How do you keep your team's communication together?

A: As we embrace and drive this new change, every team has different communication preferences (Slack, video conferencing, email). For company-wide communications, we are sharing it in multiple places. We have an 'intranet' known as Grand Central, and our communications team is sending emails and posting communications in Slack as well to accommodate communication preferences. Our leadership and business continuity teams send out regular emails to keep employees aware of important information.

Q: What wellness resources are being provided to employees during this time?

A: The Zappos Benefits team, working with our Employee Assistance Program, made webinars available to help employees cope with things such as self-isolating with your spouse and children and how to manage stress during the COVID-19 crisis. Additionally, the Benefits team extended virtual 1 on 1 counseling session and converted our Z-fit fitness program to a digital platform for employees to stay active and healthy.

Q: How do you measure productivity with employees working from home?

A: At Zappos, while we don't believe that metrics are the one and only way to measure productivity, especially as it relates to culture, each team is managing their budgets closely and managers are using different methods for tracking their team’s productivity. As mentioned before, that could be through daily check-in’s, project boards, or 3rd party project management platforms. For us, our number one priority is to keep our culture at the forefront of all of our decisions.

Q: How were employees whose work could not be done from home transitioned to working offsite? What work are they doing now?

A: Employees whose work could not be done from home have been given the opportunity to work on other projects and tasks. These projects and tasks were defined by different areas of the organization and all employees are able to take advantage of this new work.
